Damon Point Snowy Owl

Damon Point Snowy Owl by Dan Hershman
Damon Point Snowy Owl, a photo by Dan Hershman on Flickr.
A young Snowy Owl perched on the beach at Ocean Shores.  This has been an irruption year, meaning that that there have been a number of sightings in the lower 48 states this past winter in areas that they've never been seen before.  This owl was at the end of Damon Point just south of Ocean Shores.  Others have been spotted at Boundary Bay, just north of the Canadian Border.

On the two times I visited these owls there were hundreds of people looking for them.  (tell me, why do people bring dogs to go birdwatching??)  These fellows are pretty unruffled by humans being near them, which is a good thing considering what an attraction they are.  They seem to be more concerned about other birds than people,  craning their necks to see a passing seagull or other bird flying overhead.

here some additional images.
